The Brief
To create a multi-mood, multi-space, multi-purpose dining destination in California’s South Bay that’s united by a single-minded focus on excellent food, drinks, and baked goods—which just so happen to be vegan.
The Approach
With a name that alludes to the region’s year-round bounty, Twelvemonth is a celebration of California tastes and terroir. Community-minded yet open to discovery. Unpretentious yet deeply skilled. Sustainable yet sensuous. We knew the brand, its aesthetics, and its language needed to take their cues from these apparent paradoxes, mirroring the restaurant’s twin commitments to craft and approachability.
The visual identity of the brand plays with ideas of contrast, perspective, and food as a vehicle for storytelling. Intimate, hand-drawn depictions of flowers, herbs, and even phases of the moon serve as a nod to the restaurant’s name and to the region’s microseasons.
Stamp-like graphics in a formerly commercial setting gesture toward vintage farm equipment. Design elements like plaid accents create a warm, timeless, homey appeal. Meanwhile, phrases like “From the Source” and “Made in Burlingame” draw diners’ attention toward the restaurant’s on-site garden and other locally grown ingredients.
The brand’s hero device—part clock face, part seasonal compass—is an elegant articulation of these contrasting yet harmonious ideas, uniting two key components of the restaurant: locational specificity and a seasonal outlook.
AvroKO’s interior design for the space was influenced by the building’s past life as a brewery. Open and inviting, high ceilings made room for monumental green plantings. Smaller spaces were repurposed as quieter dining spaces, a bar and lounge, and a daytime bakery counter—a dynamic, flexible canvas for the Burlingame community.
